Sales Receipt
A short proof of a retail sale, ready to print or email.
A receipt in seconds, nothing uploadedOverview
A sales receipt is the slip a buyer gets at the point of sale: what was bought, how much was paid and when. It is the retail cousin of the rent or donation receipt, used for shop sales, market stalls, second-hand goods and online orders fulfilled in person. InvoiceForge builds it locally and returns a PDF you can print or send. Because it is generated in your browser, the record is yours alone until you hand it over. A sales receipt closes the sale on the spot, giving the buyer proof of purchase and the seller a simple record of the transaction.
Template only — not tax or legal advice. Confirm local invoicing and tax rules before sending.
Tips for this document
List each item sold with its price, the total paid and the payment method. Number the receipt and keep a copy so a return or warranty question can be matched to the original sale. For second-hand goods, a short description is enough, and for a stall or market a paper receipt builds trust with buyers. Keep a numbered set through the day so your sales can be reconciled against your cash at closing, and note the payment method so later disputes are easy to resolve.
FAQ
Sales receipt or invoice?
A sales receipt confirms a retail sale that was already paid at the counter or checkout. An invoice asks for payment, usually for services or B2B work. Use a sales receipt when the money changes hands at the moment of sale, and an invoice when you bill afterward.
What belongs on a sales receipt?
The date, the items and their prices, the total paid, the method of payment and a receipt number. The seller’s name makes it complete for returns and warranties, and a short description of each item avoids later confusion.
Do I need a sales receipt for used goods?
It helps. A brief receipt describing the item and the price protects both sides if the buyer later questions the sale or needs proof of ownership, and it shows the transaction was completed in good faith.
Should a sales receipt show tax?
If sales tax applies, show it as a separate line so the buyer sees the base price and the tax. For a simple private sale with no tax, the amount and date are enough, but a receipt still helps if the item is later returned or resold.
